The subject of sexual violence perpetrated by the state is a taboo which cannot be spoken about within the Kurdish issue. Particularly in the years between 1997 and 2000, for women living in Kurdish areas and women who were detained for political reasons, sexual violence was real.

That’s the finding of a new report by UN Women. “Progress of the World’s Women: in pursuit of Justice” is the first major report of the group charged with working on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

IHD: No human rights in AKP programme
Human Rights Association (IHD) criticized the programme of 61st Government for the absence of the “human rights” issue. Demanding an immediate revision of the programme, IHD said; “The new program was prepared hurriedly and the 61st Government has apparently left all our hopes to the new constitution.”
Bianet: 217 women killed by men in 2010
According to data collected by BIANET in 2010, males of all age groups, professions and status from almost all over Turkey exposed women of all age groups, professions and status to physical, psychological, sexual, economic and emotional violence.

Turkey has today ratified the Council of Europe’s Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse.

Turkey failed to ratify Convention on sexual violence against children
Last Monday in Rome a campaign was launched to raise public awareness about sexual abuse and violence against children. As a premise to the campaign is the ratification of the Council of Europe’s Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse.

Torture on sisters denounced
Policemen tortured this time in courthouse, where two sisters were made to remove their clothes to be searched. When sisters argued against the shape, they got beat up for 5,5 hours in a room they were locked in. Despite the bruises on their bodies, sisters were given “clean” report by the doctor they saw. Not only that, policemen filed charges against sisters.
